The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is indisputable that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was positioned where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely swallowed by the sea, roughly 400 metres to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has endured over the ages mostly through the activities of its fishermen, a business that flourished up to the 60's at which time stocks of fish diminished. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were essentially operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace rowed boats.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for the clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying an increasing number of tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station joining it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and currently has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
