The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is likely that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. One additional settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally swallowed by the sea, around 400 meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived throughout the decades largely through the ability of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the nineteen sixties when fish numbers declined. In addition to lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally severe conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were predominantly crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed craft.

Tourism commenced in the town early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for the clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing an ever-increasing number of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. A second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, though it was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
