The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is undeniable that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. A further settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely swallowed by the sea, around 400 meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically across the decades primarily by the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry that did well up to the 1960's when fish numbers went into decline. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's coast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were more often than not operated by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1877, carrying lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra train station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened around 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th C, and it was remodelled in the 19thC and at the moment boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
