The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is clear that there were Saxon communes around the area, it is conceivable that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A further village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured across the years principally by the expertise of its fishermen, a business that flourished up until the 60's as stocks of fish diminished. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally perilous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were by and large operated by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

The tourist business began in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1877, drawing lots more travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd station to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, but was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
