Cromer Norfolk: Found on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favoured holiday spot. Likewise known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a vital income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer presently has a population of about 7,700 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes around the area, it is certainly likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was situated where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer originally stood inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially over the generations for the most part due to the ability of its fishing fleet, a business that did well until the 1960's as fish numbers decreased. In addition to lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically risky sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were typically crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was renowned for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in 1877, carrying more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled about a decade later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed in the 19th century and now has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
