The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon townships in the region, it is very likely that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A further settlement detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally covered by the sea, roughly 400 meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived financially through the generations predominantly by the activity of its fishermen, a business which thrived up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish declined. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically risky sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

The tourist business started off in the town in the early nineteenth century, and the town was famed for the clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train came to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate railway station to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the fourteenth century, but was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and presently has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
