Equally famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally swallowed by the ocean, around 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained economically throughout the centuries primarily due to the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well until the 60's as fish numbers dropped. In addition to the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely treacherous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were largely operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was renowned for its pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in the 1870s, bringing lots more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th C, but was rebuilt during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
