Cromer Norfolk: Found on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation hotspot since the 1800s. Furthermore renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a leading income source for its local fishermen since early days.

The town today has a population of roughly 7,700 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is conceivable that the community identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it was located where the parish church now lies. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time was situated some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived across the centuries mainly due to the expertise of its fishermen, an industry which flourished until the 60's when fish numbers went into decline. As well as lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often treacherous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourism business began in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for the clean air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train was connected to the town in the 1870s, driving increasing amounts of tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd train station joining it to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, though it was remodelled in the 1800s and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
