Cromer Norfolk: Discovered on the northern coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable vacation spot. Furthermore known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing an important income for its fishermen since early times.

Cromer presently has a population of roughly 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships around the area, it is likely that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally covered by the sea, about 400 metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived through the generations primarily by the activity of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up until the 60's at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. Aside from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often unsafe conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most often crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed boats.

The tourist business developed in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at Cromer in 1877, drawing increasing numbers of tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station joining it to the East Midlands opened around 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th C, although was remodelled during the 19th century and at present has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
