Cromer Norfolk: Set on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation hotspot ever since the nineteenth century. The town presently has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is evident that there were Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is very likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it sat where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. Yet another village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters from Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time was situated from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially throughout the generations primarily through the skill of its fishermen, an industry that thrived up until the nineteen sixties as the numbers of fish decreased. In addition to the the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently life-threatening sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were normally manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed boats.

Tourism started off in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was celebrated for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in 1877, carrying an increasing quantity of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station joining it to the East Midlands was opened roughly a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, but was reconstructed during the 1800s and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
