The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favoured holiday spot. Also renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an important source of income for the local fishermen for many generations.

The town currently has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), however it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is feasible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely swallowed by the sea, about 400 metres north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the ocean in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained economically across the generations for the most part by the ability of its fishing fleet, a business that did well until the 60's at which time fish stocks went into decline. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes dangerous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were in most cases operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

The tourism business started out in the town in the early nineteenth century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra railway station to the East Midlands was opened around a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the fourteenth century, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and presently has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
