The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Located on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has long been a fashionable holiday spot. Equally well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential source of income for the fishermen since early days.

The town nowadays has a populace of roughly 7,700 residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the region, it is probable that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it was positioned where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A different village outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely swallowed by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained over the ages largely by the talent of its fishermen, a business which thrived until the nineteen sixties when fish stocks went into decline. Besides lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently treacherous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were often crewed by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

The tourist business started out in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was famed for the pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, bringing increasing amounts of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another station to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, although was rebuilt in the 19thC and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
