The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable holiday destination. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is certain that there were Saxon townships in the area, it is very likely that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it was located where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days entirely under the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically through the generations predominantly due to the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the 60's as fish numbers declined. In addition to the the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often life-threatening sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

Tourism commenced in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and it was acknowledged for the clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in the 1870s, drawing lots more tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station joining it to the East Midlands opened around 10 years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originally dates from the fourteenth century, although it was remodelled during the 19thC and today has the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
