The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, nonetheless there were certainly Saxon communites in the area, it is certainly likely that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now stands. A further village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, about four hundred meters from the pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially through the generations largely through the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived up to the 60's as fish stocks declined. In addition to the the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically perilous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were normally crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The tourism industry started off in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was recognized for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station to the East Midlands opened approximately ten years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed in the 19thC and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
