Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a popular vacation spot ever since the nineteenth century. Also recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant source of income for the fishermen over the ages.

Cromer today has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the region, it is possible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. An additional village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely under the sea, roughly 400 metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived over the generations for the most part by the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up to the 60's at which time the numbers of fish declined. In addition to lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely severe conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism began in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was renowned for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing lots more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra railway station joining it to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt during the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
