Cromer in Norfolk: Located on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite holiday destination. In addition well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an essential source of income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town nowadays has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is plausible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived economically through the ages mostly due to the talent of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived up to the nineteen sixties as stocks of fish diminished. Besides the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often life-threatening sea conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were most often operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed vessels.

Tourism started off in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was renowned for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in the 1870s, delivering an ever-increasing amount of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul first dates from the 14th century, and it was rebuilt in the 19th century and at the moment boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
