The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Situated on the north coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a favourite vacation spot since the 1800s. Also well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a leading income source for its fishermen through the years.

The town at this time has a population of approximately seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is incontestable that there were Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is possible that the community listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely covered by the sea, around 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured through the years for the most part by the expertise of its fishermen, an industry that thrived until the 1960's as stocks of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes severe conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were oftentimes operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace man-powered vessels.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for its clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in 1877, delivering lots more tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate rail station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, but was remodelled during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
