The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Found on the north sea coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular vacation destination. Also renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income for the fishermen through the centuries.

The town at this time has a populace of around 7,700 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is certain that there were Anglo Saxon settlements in the area, it is possible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was placed where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. A further village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally swallowed by the ocean, roughly four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was over time demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed across the decades principally through the activities of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 60's when stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were frequently manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism began in the town in the early 1800s, and it was acknowledged for the pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing more and more travellers to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional railway station to the East Midlands opened up about ten years after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, but was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
