The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Sitting on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favorite vacation spot. Additionally reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a vital income source for its fishermen since early days.

The town at present has a populace of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is probable that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it was positioned where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, approximately 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was over time eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed financially throughout the decades principally by the activity of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 60's as stocks of fish declined. Aside from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally treacherous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The tourist business developed in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in the 1870s, drawing a growing amount of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another railway station joining it to the East Midlands was opened around ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the fourteenth century, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
