The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the northern coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favorite holiday spot. Equally known as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a vital income source for the local fishermen since early times.

Cromer these days has a populace of just below eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is not disputed that there were Saxon communites in the region, it is very likely that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, about 400 meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago sat some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained economically throughout the ages principally by the activity of its fishermen, a business that thrived up to the 1960's when stocks of fish declined. Apart from the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically severe conditions off Norfolk's coast, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered boats.

The holiday industry commenced in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in 1877, delivering more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd station connecting it to the East Midlands opened around a decade after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt during the 19thC and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
