The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favourite vacation destination. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the area, it is certainly likely that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now stands. An additional settlement recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely under the sea, around 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the decades mainly due to the prowess of its fishermen, an industry which thrived until the 60's as the numbers of fish went into decline. As well as the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely risky conditions off the coast of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were typically crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was renowned for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in 1877, bringing more and more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second train station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened roughly ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th C, although was rebuilt in the 19thC and at this time has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
