Cromer in Norfolk: Found on the north coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite vacation destination. Likewise well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading source of income for the fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer at this time has a populace of approximately 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is quite possible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was positioned where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A different village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally stood inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially over the generations by and large through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that thrived until the 60's when stocks of fish went into decline. Aside from the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally severe sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered craft.

The tourist business started in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering an ever-increasing quantity of tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate railway station to the East Midlands opened approximately a decade after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed in the 19thC and now boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
