The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Situated on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular vacation destination. In addition recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a substantial income source for the local fishermen throughout the years.

Cromer nowadays has a population of just under eight thousand occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is a fact that there were Saxon communes in the area, it is possible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, approximately 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer long ago sat inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived throughout the centuries primarily by the activities of its fishermen, a business which did well up to the 60's as fish stocks went into decline. In addition to lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally perilous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were routinely crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed boats.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and it was renowned for its pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving growing numbers of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An extra station to the East Midlands opened about 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, and it was reconstructed in the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
