Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured holiday destination. In addition reputable as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town presently has a populace of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon townships around the area, it is likely that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A different village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially across the decades mainly by the activities of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived up to the 60's as stocks of fish dropped. In addition to the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally severe conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most commonly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered boats.

The tourism business developed in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train found its way to the town in 1877, carrying more and more people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate rail station to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, but was remodelled in the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
