The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon settlements in the region, it is quite possible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. Another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely covered by the sea, approximately 400 metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived over the decades predominantly due to the activities of its fishermen, a business that thrived until the 60's when stocks of fish declined. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically severe conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism business commenced in Cromer in the early 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for the clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in the town in the 1870s, carrying lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station to the East Midlands was unveiled around ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, though it was rebuilt in the 1800s and now has the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
