The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the Domesday Book (1086), however there were certainly Saxon settlements in the area, it is conceivable that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish church now lies. An additional settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, about 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally was situated inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically through the centuries mostly through the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish declined. In addition to the lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes unsafe sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were by and large manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

The tourism business started in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was recognized for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to Cromer in the 1870s, driving a growing quantity of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th Cent, but was reconstructed during the 19th century and at this time has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
