The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that it is clear that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is likely that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it sat where the parish church now stands. A further village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally covered by the sea, approximately 400 meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned inland, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained throughout the years largely through the activities of its fishermen, an industry that did well up to the 1960's as the numbers of fish went into decline. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally dangerous conditions off Norfolk's coast, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most commonly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism commenced in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was famed for the pure air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying lots more people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra station to the East Midlands opened up about a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th C, and it was remodelled during the 19th century and now has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
