The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Discovered on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well liked vacation spot ever since the 1800s. Additionally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a significant income for the fishermen for many generations.

The town currently has a populace of just under 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Saxon encampments in the region, it is possible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now stands. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely swallowed by the sea, about 400 meters from the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned some way inland, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the ages for the most part due to the competence of its fishermen, an industry which did well until the 60's at which time the numbers of fish declined. In addition to the lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally severe conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were regularly operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed boats.

The tourism business started off in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was recognized for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in 1877, delivering lots more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd station connecting it to the East Midlands opened around ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was reconstructed during the 19thC and today has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
