The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Found on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday spot since the 19th century. Furthermore respected as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing an essential income for its local fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a populace of around seven thousand seven hundred residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the area, it is feasible that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was positioned where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, around 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived over the years mainly through the prowess of its fishermen, an industry which thrived until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish decreased. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally dangerous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were often manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd train station to the East Midlands was opened approximately a decade after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th Cent, though it was rebuilt during the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
