Cromer Norfolk: Located on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation hotspot ever since the 1800s. Additionally renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a substantial source of income for the local fishermen since early days.

Cromer nowadays has a populace of just below 8,000 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is acknowledged that there were Saxon townships around the area, it is conceivable that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now stands. A second settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the ocean, around 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived over the decades by and large due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry which prospered up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers dropped. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly unsafe conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were normally crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed lifeboats.

The tourist industry started out in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was renowned for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in the 1870s, carrying more and more people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened about 10 years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th Cent, and it was remodelled during the 19thC and at the moment has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
