The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Found on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favoured holiday destination. Equally well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a leading income for its local fishermen throughout the ages.

The town currently has a populace of just under eight thousand residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is evident that there were Anglo Saxon townships around the area, it is probable that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was placed where the parish church now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely swallowed by the ocean, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer at one time sat some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained over the centuries for the most part by the activities of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish declined. Besides lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally risky sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism started out in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering a growing amount of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. The second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originally dates from the fourteenth century, although it was rebuilt during the 19thC and at present boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
