Cromer in Norfolk: Discovered on the north coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a favorite holiday destination since the nineteenth century. Equally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing an essential income for its local fishermen since early days.

The town presently has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, though there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Yet another settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, roughly 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has managed through the centuries mainly by the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered up until the 60's as the numbers of fish dropped. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often life-threatening sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were by and large crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered craft.

Tourism started out in the town in the first half of the 19th century, and the town was renowned for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering lots more travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another train station to the East Midlands was opened approximately a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originally dates from the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
