Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a popular vacation spot ever since the 1800s. Equally reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a major income source for the fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer at this time has a population of about eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there certainly would have been Saxon communites in the area, it is quite possible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish church now lies. A second settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the sea, roughly four hundred metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was positioned some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained over the years mostly by the competence of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the 1960's when the numbers of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly treacherous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely crewed by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

The holiday industry developed in the town early in the 19th century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, delivering increasing amounts of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra rail station linking it to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th C, although it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and today has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
