The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has long been a favoured holiday spot. In addition respected as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an essential income source for the local fishermen since early times.

Cromer today has a populace of just under eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is feasible that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it was positioned where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived financially throughout the decades mostly through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished until the 60's as fish stocks declined. In addition to the the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often treacherous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, which permitted powered lifeboats to take over from rowed boats.

The holiday business developed in the town early in the 1800s, and it was recognized for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1877, delivering more and more visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd train station to the East Midlands opened up around ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt during the 19th century and at this time boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
