Cromer Norfolk: Discovered on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a fashionable holiday destination. Likewise known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a leading income for its fishermen over the years.

The town at this time has a populace of approximately 7,700 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is feasible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was situated where the parish church now stands. One additional settlement posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally under the sea, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago stood some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was slowly but surely destroyed by the ocean during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained across the centuries predominantly by the skill of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up until the 60's as fish numbers went into decline. Besides lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were predominantly operated by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The holiday industry started off in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was famed for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, delivering more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station linking it to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, although it was rebuilt in the 1800s and currently has the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
