The holiday business commenced in the town early in the nineteenth century, and the town was recognized for its pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in 1877, bringing growing numbers of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened around ten years after this.
