The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is conceivable that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it was located where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally under the sea, about 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived through the years by and large due to the activity of its fishermen, an industry that flourished until the nineteen sixties as the numbers of fish diminished. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often dangerous sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were frequently operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered boats.

Tourism started out in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was famous for the pure air and health improving bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in 1877, carrying increasing amounts of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second railway station to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originally dates from the 14th century, although was rebuilt in the 19th century and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
