The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even if it is recognized that there were Saxon settlements in the region, it is very likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it sat where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, about four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has managed economically through the ages predominantly through the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that did well up until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish went into decline. In addition to the the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly treacherous sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were in most cases crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered boats.

The tourism business started off in the town early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for its clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing an ever-increasing number of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled about 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the fourteenth century, but was reconstructed during the 19thC and currently has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
