The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the northern coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a fashionable holiday destination. Equally respected as a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an important income source for the fishermen throughout the decades.

Cromer today has a populace of approximately seven thousand seven hundred residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is undeniable that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is conceivable that the community listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A second settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely covered by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has endured through the decades by and large through the ability of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up to the nineteen sixties at which time stocks of fish declined. In addition to the lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally hazardous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely crewed by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

Tourism started out in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for the pure air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing growing numbers of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. The second rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, though it was reconstructed during the 19th century and at this time has the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
