Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the north coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a popular holiday destination. Furthermore recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, providing a substantial income source for the local fishermen for many centuries.

The town presently has a population of just below eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes around the area, it is plausible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now lies. An additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely under the sea, around 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer at one time sat some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured economically through the decades by and large through the prowess of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up until the 1960's when fish stocks dropped. In addition to the the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly life-threatening sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mainly operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

The tourism business started off in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in the 1870s, drawing lots more visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A 2nd station linking it to the East Midlands opened about 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, and it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
