The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now stands. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400 meters to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially through the years largely through the expertise of its fishermen, an industry that thrived until the nineteen sixties at which time stocks of fish went into decline. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally severe sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were more often than not operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourism business started out in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was recognized for its pure air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at the town in 1877, delivering an ever-increasing number of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd rail station joining it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, although was rebuilt in the 19th century and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
