The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), nonetheless it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the area, it is probable that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now lies. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely covered by the sea, roughly four hundred meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some way inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained across the ages principally due to the expertise of its fishermen, an industry that thrived until the 60's as fish numbers declined. In addition to the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically hazardous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were in most cases operated by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from man-powered craft.

The tourism industry started off in the town early in the 19th century, and it was famed for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, bringing increasing numbers of visitors to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands opened up approximately ten years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church first dates from the 14th century, although was remodelled in the 19thC and at the moment boasts the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
