The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Found on the northern coastline of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a well liked vacation hotspot since the nineteenth century. Furthermore known as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, providing a substantial income source for the fishermen throughout the generations.

The town today has a population of just under eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer History: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the region, it is most likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was positioned where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. Yet another settlement identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely covered by the sea, roughly 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived across the decades by and large through the competence of its fishing fleet, a business which did well up until the 60's when stocks of fish dropped. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly perilous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were more often than not operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered craft.

The tourism business began in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was recognized for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing an ever-increasing amount of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened about a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th century, although was reconstructed in the 1800s and at this time has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
