The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, nonetheless there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is very likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it was placed where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally under the sea, approximately four hundred metres north-east of the pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the generations primarily through the activities of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived up until the 1960's when the numbers of fish declined. Apart from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly dangerous sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were in most cases manned by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to replace man-powered craft.

Tourism started in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for the pure air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying more and more visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra train station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th C, although it was rebuilt in the 19th century and now has got the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
