The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though there were certainly Saxon communites around the area, it is probable that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it was placed where the parish church now lies. Cromer once upon a time was situated some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially across the decades principally through the ability of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish declined. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying a growing quantity of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. The second station connecting it to the East Midlands opened approximately ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and today has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
