The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is clear that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is very likely that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400 meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained over the centuries for the most part by the skill of its fishermen, a business that thrived until the nineteen sixties when fish stocks declined. Apart from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally perilous conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were usually crewed by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered craft.

The tourism industry began in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was famed for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. Another station to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th century, but was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and now has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
