The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the northern coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has long been a favorite vacation destination. Equally known as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a significant income source for the local fishermen throughout the years.

Cromer these days has a populace of about eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is undisputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it sat where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. Yet another settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally sat some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has sustained financially over the centuries mainly due to the skill of its fishing fleet, a business that flourished up to the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish diminished. Aside from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically hazardous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were frequently crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered vessels.

The tourism industry commenced in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was famed for its pure air and health giving bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second train station to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed during the 1800s and now has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
