The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there were certainly Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is possible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it was located where the parish church now stands. A different settlement outlined in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally under the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was positioned some distance inland, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely destroyed by the ocean in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived through the generations by and large through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished until the 60's as fish numbers decreased. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The routinely dangerous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism business began in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was acknowledged for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving lots more people to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. Another station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up around ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th century, although it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and today has the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
