Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the north coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite vacation destination. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there certainly would have been Saxon communes in the region, it is feasible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it was positioned where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely covered by the sea, approximately four hundred meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the centuries principally due to the activities of its fishermen, a business which prospered until the 60's when stocks of fish declined. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally life-threatening conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were most commonly manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from rowed lifeboats.

The holiday industry began in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1877, bringing more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional rail station to the East Midlands opened about ten years after this.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, though it was remodelled in the 1800s and presently has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
