The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Located on the northern coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday destination since the 1800s. Additionally famous as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town at this time has a population of roughly seven thousand seven hundred residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is very likely that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now stands. A further settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally swallowed by the ocean, about four hundred meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago was situated inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived over the generations mainly through the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up to the nineteen sixties as fish stocks decreased. In addition to the lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were more often than not operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed lifeboats.

The tourist industry developed in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was acknowledged for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands opened roughly a decade after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, although it was remodelled in the 1800s and now has the tallest church tower in the county (160 foot).
